Discovering the Lydian Mode on Guitar: Adding a Unique Twist to Your Playing
The Lydian mode is one of the most interesting and uplifting scales in music, giving a distinctive sound that’s both bright and slightly mysterious. This scale has been used by artists like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and even in the theme music of popular films. Learning the Lydian mode on guitar allows you to explore new melodic ideas, add flavor to solos, and develop a unique musical voice.
I highly recommend checking out "The Ultimate Guitar Major Modes Book" for the ultimate reference guide to the major scales and it's seven modes including Lydian.
What is the LYDIAN MODE?
The Lydian mode is the fourth mode of the major scale, but it has a unique twist: it’s just like the major scale, but with a raised 4th. This sharp fourth interval gives it a dreamy, floating sound that stands out from the traditional major scale.
- Formula: Root - Major 2nd - Major 3rd - Augmented 4th (#4) - Perfect 5th - Major 6th - Major 7th
The diagram below shows the Lydian scale on one string so you can see the interval spacings.
What Makes the Lydian Mode Different from a Regular Scale?
While the Lydian mode is a type of scale, calling it a “mode” emphasizes its role as one of the seven modes derived from the major scale. Each mode begins on a different degree (or note) of the major scale, creating a unique pattern of intervals and a distinct sound. The Lydian mode, in particular, starts on the fourth degree of the major scale, which is why it has that raised 4th note (or augmented fourth) that gives it a unique, dreamy character.
So, while the Lydian mode is indeed a scale, it’s best thought of as a flavor or variation of the major scale rather than just another scale. Here’s how it fits in context:
The Major Scale: The foundational scale with its familiar “do-re-mi” sound.
Modes of the Major Scale: Variations on the major scale, each starting on a different note and producing a different sound due to the interval shifts.
- Lydian Mode: This mode begins on the fourth note of a major scale. For example, if you play a C major scale but start on the F note and follow the C major scale notes (F-G-A-B-C-D-E), you get the F Lydian mode. This gives the unique interval pattern Root, 2, 3, #4, 5, 6, 7, different from the major scale’s Root, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
The diagram below shows a comparison of the intervals of the major scale and Lydian mode. They are both very similar and great scales to play over major chords and other extented chords like major 7 or major 9 chords.
Why Learn the LYDIAN MODE?
-
Unique Sound: The raised 4th gives the Lydian mode a mystical, open sound that’s perfect for creating unique and memorable solos.
-
Works Well Over Major Chords: The Lydian mode fits naturally over major chords, adding an unexpected color.
- Used in Many Genres: From jazz to rock, pop to film scores, the Lydian mode’s versatility makes it popular in diverse musical contexts.
